What thing is necessary?

The one thing that is necessary is found in Luke 10:38-42:

Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

Life is full of busyness and business, various things always vying for our time. Time quickly passes by, quicker each week and the quickening rate accelerates each year. With busy lives and full calendars, it is important to remember what is most important.

Work and family and all these things are important, yet there is something better.

How often do you find yourself busily "serving" / working and being overwhelmed, bothered and anxious about it because you are doing it all "alone"? I do, not infrequently. Note Martha's words, implicit in this overwhelmed state is an accusation: "Lord, you don't care."

Listen well to the words of the Savior: "O precious Martha, Martha--there is something better." What is it? In a word: worship. Treasuring the Savior, sitting at his feet enjoying his word, finding satisfaction and pleasure in all that he is, "the radiance of the glory of God."

Well, maybe two things are necessary. The first is to come to Jesus Christ by faith, the second is to love and adore him, i.e. the devotion to Christ exemplified by Mary above. Allah is not the way, unless you mean the broad way that leads to destruction. There is no forgiveness for a Jehovah's Witness. Jesus is not just a way, he is the way to the Father, the only way, and you're not allowed to redefine who he is. (John 14:6) You might not like it, but that is the Jesus of the Scriptures. He is Lord, YHWH of the Old Testament, the promised Messiah, God incarnate, the only Savior, the only Mediator between God and man, the only payment for sin, the only One who conquered death by rising from the dead. In his own words: "Repent and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:15) The two important things are really one, but in the day we live in, I thought it important to spell out the implications.

This is a simple blog with a simple goal: focusing on "the good part", namely "the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ." We really only sit at the Lord's feet and enjoy him when we step out of the flow of everyday business. So let's stop and think every now and then, eh? Let's remember what the one important thing is, lest we end up busy people who are not busy about worshiping their King, the Lord Jesus Christ.

May we never forget the one necessary thing, the reason we exist and the reason Jesus came to redeem--the glory of God through Jesus Christ made known by the adoration of a holy people devoted to him.
